Aichelberg Castle is a ruin of a medieval stone fortress positioned on an elevated rocky outcrop near Wernberg, offering views across the Carinthian landscape. The remaining stonework sits on a plateau that becomes increasingly visible as visitors approach from the valleys below.
Construction of the castle began around 1200 under the Knights of Aichelberg to secure the region. In 1500 Hungarian forces under King Matthias Corvinus destroyed the fortress, and it was never rebuilt.
The ruins belonged to a network of fortifications where beacon fires relayed messages between castles across the region. This long-distance communication method was vital for medieval lords to control their territories.
The path to the ruins winds uphill from the valley to the plateau and requires good physical stamina for the climb. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time, as the ascent can be demanding.
After its destruction, the Khevenhüller family received permission in 1511 to build a completely new fortress at Damtschach rather than restore the original. This choice shows how medieval conflicts reshaping the region's fortification landscape.
