Mozart Monument, Vienna, Marble monument in Burggarten, Innere Stadt district, Austria
The Mozart Monument is a marble statue of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart located in the Burggarten in Vienna's first district. It stands on a multi-tiered base with relief panels depicting scenes from his work.
The monument was unveiled in 1896 and originally stood in a different part of the city before being damaged during World War II. After restoration, it was moved to its current spot in the Burggarten in 1953.
The statue shows Mozart looking downward, holding a score, surrounded by flower beds that are often freshly tended. Few visitors stop to read the reliefs on the base, which depict scenes from his operas.
The monument stands in the middle of the Burggarten and is easy to reach on foot from the Ringstrasse. The park is mostly flat and open, making the walk straightforward for most visitors.
The base of the monument combines pale Laas marble from South Tyrol with darker diorite steps, a contrast that many visitors walk past without noticing. Looking closely at the join between the two materials reveals how deliberately the two stones were chosen to work together.
