Schloss Grubegg, Protected château in Bad Mitterndorf, Austria
Schloss Grubegg is a two-story rectangular building with a wooden hipped roof, positioned south of Bad Mitterndorf in the Austrian countryside. The structure features six window axes on each side and presents itself as a well-proportioned residential manor with solid stone walls.
Merchant Andrä Grueber initiated construction in 1591, funding the project through his wealth from industrial mills in the Aussee region. The building suffered two fires during the 17th century and was rebuilt without its original defensive structures.
The castle served as the residence of the Grubegg family for centuries, representing their social standing in the region. Today visitors can see how the building reflects the domestic life and values of the local nobility.
The castle is located about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) south of Bad Mitterndorf town center and is easily accessible by car or foot. Following major restoration work, it now operates as a holiday residence where visitors can experience comfortable accommodations in a historic setting.
The structure survived two devastating fires in the 17th century, after which the owners fundamentally reshaped it. This transformation from a fortified stronghold into a comfortable residence gives the building a unique dual character in its physical form.
