Semmering, Winter sports resort in Semmering, Austria.
Semmering is a ski resort in the eastern Alps in Lower Austria, situated on the mountain pass of the same name at around 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level. The slopes are served by a small network of lifts and cover a range of difficulty levels, making it a manageable destination for different types of skiers.
The area became accessible in the mid-1800s with the opening of the Semmering Railway, the first mountain railway in the world, completed in 1854. That rail connection brought city visitors from Vienna and turned the mountain pass into a destination for rest and winter sport.
Semmering is known as one of the oldest winter sport destinations in Austria, and the old villas and grand hotels along the slopes still reflect that long tradition. Visitors today mix skiers with walkers and those simply taking in the surroundings on a winter day.
The resort is directly connected to Semmering train station, making it one of the few ski areas in Austria reachable without a car from Vienna. Weekends tend to draw larger crowds, so a weekday visit gives more space on the slopes.
Semmering hosted one of the earliest organized ski races in Austria in 1905, at a time when the sport was still a novelty for most people. That early racing history places it among the first sites where competitive skiing took shape in the country.
