Frauenkirche Maria die Glorreiche, Neoclassical church in Baden, Austria
Frauenkirche Maria die Glorreiche is a neoclassical church on Frauengasse with two symmetrical towers that frame the street facade. A large round-arched window sits between the towers above the central portal.
The church traces its origins to the 13th century, when it first appeared in documents from Heiligenkreuz Abbey. It was reconstructed after the great fire of Baden in 1812 and took its current neoclassical form between 1825 and 1826.
The church's name reflects the veneration of Mary that shaped Baden's religious life for centuries. Visitors can sense this devotion in the orderly, reverent spaces inside.
The church sits centrally in Baden at Frauengasse 3 and is easily reached on foot. Since it is a protected monument, it is wise to check opening hours before planning a visit.
After the city fire of 1812, Baron Joseph Friedrich von Haan purchased the ruins and restored them before selling the properties to Emperor Franz I. The church thus became tied to Baden's recovery from that disaster.
