Brückenkopfgebäude, Neo-classical monument in Linz, Austria
The Brückenkopfgebäude consists of two symmetrical structures with granite facades and arcaded walkways positioned at both ends of the Nibelungen Bridge. The buildings have a solid, imposing presence that shapes the visual landscape around the bridge.
Construction began in 1940 under architect Roderich Fick and required the demolition of around 274 apartments and the displacement of many residents. The structures were later renovated extensively between 2015 and 2019 to accommodate modern uses.
The building now houses the Art University of Linz, serving as a working space where students and visitors encounter contemporary art on display and in creation. The spaces feel active and are regularly filled with artistic projects and exhibitions.
The renovated structures offer accessible entrances and modern facilities for visitors and students. Those exploring the building will find clear pathways through the arcaded walkways and to the main areas.
A 12-meter glass elevator called the Transcendence Lift, created by artist Karin Sander, extends beyond the roof of the eastern structure. This installation creates an unusual link between the architecture and contemporary art.
