Naturschutzgebiet Teufelstein-Fischerwiesen

The nature reserve Teufelstein-Fischerwiesen covers dozens of hectares with rocky steppes, dry grasslands, and woodland edge communities in the Mödling district near Vienna. The area includes walking trails, observation points, and several ponds, where swimming is restricted to protect amphibian breeding.

The site was placed under protection in 1936 and expanded in 2016 when a former quarry was added to the reserve. The quarry operated for nearly a century before being abandoned, and the land gradually returned to a natural state.

The rocky outcrop called Teufelstein shapes how people experience this area, with plants adapted to stony ground creating a distinctive landscape. Visitors can observe how certain species thrive in these harsh conditions and define the local environment.

Visitors should wear sturdy footwear because the terrain is steep and rocky throughout the reserve. Early morning to early afternoon offers the best conditions for walking and observing wildlife without excessive heat.

The reserve is home to rare plants and animals normally found only in the Alps or Eastern Europe. This unexpected mix makes the place a window into ecosystems that are usually much farther away.
