Olympiabahn, Funicular in Axams, Austria

The Olympiabahn is a funicular with an Abt switchback in the Axamer Lizum ski area, running 2105 m from the valley station up to the Hoadl at 2340 m. Its track, built on a bridge 1.5 to 20 m above the ground, has a gauge of 1427 mm and climbs gradients of up to 54 percent. Two cabins carry up to 120 people each.

The Axamer Lizum ski area was created for the alpine events of the 1964 Winter Olympics. For the 1976 Games, the Olympiabahn was added alongside the existing chairlifts to Hoadl and opened on 20 December 1975. It was built between 1973 and 1975.

The Olympiabahn runs parallel to the older chairlifts up to the Hoadl, so regulars know it as the second way up the mountain. Its name recalls the 1976 Winter Olympics, for which it was built alongside the 1964 facilities of the Axamer Lizum.

The 2105 m line runs on a bridge 1.5 to 20 m above the ground, so the cabins clear the snow-covered slope below. Cabins hold up to 120 people each and take at most five minutes; in winter they run at 10 m/s, in summer at 5 m/s. The line runs on a 2105-metre bridge between 1.5 and 20 metres above the ground, built by VÖEST-Alpine AG, so the track stays clear of snow on the slopes below. The two cars were assembled by Waagner-Biro and Bombardier-Rotax, each holding 120 people.
