Masally District, Administrative district in southeastern Azerbaijan
Masally is an administrative district in southeastern Azerbaijan situated between the Caspian Sea and the Talysh Mountains. The landscape features forests and settlements spread across varying terrain, with the city of Masally as its main hub.
The district was established in 1930 from the former Arkevan region that had been part of Lankaran District. The area contains architectural and archaeological remains spanning many centuries of settlement.
Azerbaijani and Talysh communities live side by side, each following their own customs and preparing different regional dishes. You notice these distinctions in local celebrations and the way people gather in village squares.
Expect humid conditions, particularly in lower areas closer to the Caspian Sea, which can affect comfort during exploration. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for visiting and walking through the settlements.
The village of Erkivan is known for its numerous natural springs bubbling from the ground, shaping the local landscape. The forests here contain a rare wood species with timber so dense it sinks in water.
