Govurqala

The fortified settlement extends across 40 hectares of land, featuring round and square defense towers measuring between 3 to 6 meters in height.

Archaeological excavations revealed this site functioned as a summer residence for Caucasus Albania rulers and contained the medieval town of Aluen during the 3rd to 10th centuries.

The excavation findings include diverse artifacts such as beads, weaving instruments, stone houses, Pagan and Christian shrines, and a Byzantine emperor Anastasius I currency.

The site contains twelve buildings within its walls and maintains two protective moats, with the larger one measuring 100 meters by 30 meters.

Researchers identified four different archaeological sites named Govurqala across Azerbaijan, each contributing distinct evidence about regional settlement patterns.
