Tigranakert Fortress

Tigranakert is an ancient fortress in Aghdam with remains spread across a large area, featuring stone walls, defensive towers, and foundations of residential structures near the Khachinchay River. The site contains overlapping building phases that reflect different periods and rulers throughout history.

The fortress was founded between 120 and 80 BC under the Artaxiad dynasty and later saw major military conflicts across the centuries. A significant battle took place in 625 AD between Byzantine and Sasanian forces competing for control of the region.

Excavations at the site reveal inscriptions in Armenian and Greek, showing that different peoples lived and built here over centuries. Visitors can still see evidence of these communities in the remains scattered across the fortress grounds.

The ruins are accessible through marked routes in Aghdam District, though visitors should get necessary permissions before exploring the area. It is wise to check ahead about current conditions and access restrictions at the site.

The fortress grounds contain the foundations of Shahbulag Castle, built in the 18th century by Panah Ali directly over the ancient structures below. This shows how later rulers reused and layered fortifications at strategically important locations.
