We Are Our Mountains, Monumental sculpture in Stepanakert, Azerbaijan
We Are Our Mountains is a monumental sculpture in Stepanakert consisting of two figures carved from volcanic tuff. The two characters stand at a height of 9 meters at an elevation of approximately 720 meters above sea level.
The work was completed in 1967 by Armenian sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan and quickly became a central landmark of the city. Its location in the northern section of Stepanakert made it a defining symbol for the region.
The sculpture shows an elderly couple representing the deep bond between people and their mountainous home. It embodies the relationship between generations and the land that shaped them.
The monument is accessible from the main road north of the city center, with parking spaces located directly near the site. Access is straightforward and the surroundings offer good orientation for visitors.
The figures are known locally as Tatik u Papik, meaning Grandpa and Grandma, reflecting a strong family connection in the name itself. They appear to emerge directly from the mountain, as if rising from the earth itself.
