"Khan gizi" spring, Natural spring in Shusha, Azerbaijan

Khan gizi is a natural spring in Shusha that channels water from Saribaba mountain to the city through an underground pipeline system. The spring features multiple water outlets and marble-lined basins where residents collect their water.

The spring was constructed during the late 1800s to supply drinking water to the expanding city. After decades of non-use, it was restored to service in recent years.

The spring bears the name of Khurshidbanu Natavan, daughter of Karabakh's last Khan and a renowned Azerbaijani poet of the 1800s. Visitors can see inscriptions and decorative elements that honor her connection to this public space.

The spring is located in the city center and is open to the public for free water collection. Visitors should bring their own containers if they wish to carry water away from the site.

Water travels from a distant mountain spring through a network of pipes laid over a century ago. This simple delivery system reveals how mountain cities once solved their water needs before modern infrastructure became common.
