Shusha Carpet Museum, Carpet museum in Shusha District, Azerbaijan
The Shusha Carpet Museum presents traditional Karabakh carpets with geometric patterns, floral motifs, and dense textures made from local sheep wool. The collection spans different style variations from this renowned weaving tradition.
The museum was established in 1985 as a branch of the State Museum of Azerbaijani Carpets and originally operated in a mansion of General Samad bey Mehmandarov. Its operations were interrupted in 2020 and the collection was relocated elsewhere.
The collection represents works from the Karabakh weaving school, where craftspeople use traditional patterns and colors passed down through generations. Visitors can see how regional techniques reflect themselves in the design of each carpet.
The museum is currently not accessible in its original building, which is undergoing restoration. Visitors can view the collection instead at the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum in Baku.
Before operations were interrupted, the museum staff managed to save and secure hundreds of valuable textiles from loss. This rescue effort preserved an important part of the cultural heritage.
