Divankhan Square, Historical square in Shusha, Azerbaijan
Divankhan Square sits at the entrance of Ganja Gate and marks where Rasta Bazaar, the main shopping street, begins. The square is framed by a 19th-century caravanserai on its southern side and opens to two parallel streets running south from this point.
The square was originally enclosed within the Karabakh Khan Palace complex and remained cut off from public access until the early 19th century. Reconstruction work then transformed it into an open marketplace that connected the city's neighborhoods.
This location served as the heart of local governance and commerce for centuries. The buildings surrounding it tell the story of how power and trade were organized in the city.
The square is easy to reach from Ganja Gate and serves as a natural starting point for exploring the bazaar area. The connecting streets heading south are relatively level, making them comfortable for walking and browsing the surrounding shops.
A Saint George Church once stood here, built from a converted administrative building that originally served the Khan. The structure was later demolished, leaving a notable gap in the square's physical history.
