Aghoghlan Gate, Medieval gate of Shusha Fortress in Shusha, Azerbaijan
Aghoghlan Gate is an eastern passage of Shusha Fortress in the Shusha District. The structure displays characteristic features of the Arran architectural school with stone walls that blend into the mountainous landscape.
The gate was built in 1701 during the establishment of Shusha Fortress and served as one of three main entry points to the fortified settlement. It functioned as a vital control point for movement between the fortress and surrounding areas.
The gate connects the main fortress to the villages of Shushikend and Mukhtar, reflecting the historical relationship between urban and rural communities.
The gate sits at an elevation of roughly 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) and remains accessible to visitors exploring the fortress structures. The location provides a good starting point for viewing the surrounding defensive structures.
The gate was constructed from local stones quarried in the immediate vicinity of the mountain. This practical building method used natural resources and integrated the structure seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
