Çətir waterfall, Mountain waterfall in Shusha District, Azerbaijan.
Çətir is a waterfall located in Karkar Canyon where water cascades through limestone formations and creates a natural umbrella shape when viewed from certain angles. The water flows over layered stone surfaces, forming a distinctive pattern that inspired the site's name.
The waterfall became more accessible after the 2020 conflict when Azerbaijan regained control of Shusha District and surrounding territories. This change reopened the site to visitors after a period of restricted access.
The waterfall area has been a meeting place for local residents during the warmer months, establishing its role as a community landmark over time. This tradition reflects how the place connects people to their natural surroundings.
The waterfall sits about 3 kilometers from Dashalty village and requires a guided hike along marked trails to reach the viewing areas. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven ground, as the paths are steep and can be slippery in wet conditions.
During rainfall the flowing water forms a natural parasol shape, which is how the site got its name Çətir, meaning umbrella in the local language. This natural phenomenon is why an everyday word became the name of this location.
