Jidir Plain, Protected area in Shusha District, Azerbaijan
Jidir Plain is a protected area in southern Shusha featuring elevations between 1400 and 1800 meters that overlook the Dashalty Gorge and river. A trail leads to Girkh Pillakan, known as the forty steps, which descends into the gorge.
During the Karabakh Khanate period, Ibrahim Khalil Khan organized regular horse races on the plain, where riders demonstrated their equestrian abilities. These events took place twice yearly and were part of the regional riding tradition.
The plain serves as a center for Novruz celebrations, the traditional Persian New Year festival, and hosts various regional ceremonial gatherings. People continue to use this space for cultural meetings and community festivities.
The best time to visit is during warmer months when the trails are easy to walk and visibility is clearest. Bring appropriate clothing, as the elevation means it can be windy and cool.
The Baharbandi competitions held here were remarkable feats of horsemanship, where riders collected their hats, rifles, and daggers while galloping across the field. This acrobatic event showcased the highest level of traditional riding skill in the region.
