Vagif Mausoleum, Constructivist mausoleum in Shusha, Azerbaijan
The Vagif Mausoleum is a constructivist structure in Shusha built from reddish Karabakh marble plates combined with white and grey marble. The building features aluminum decorative elements along its walls, with the poet's name displayed in traditional script above the entrance.
The mausoleum was constructed in 1982 under architect Abdulvahab Salamzadeh's direction to commemorate the life of the man it honors. The structure was designed to celebrate someone who served as vizier of the Karabakh Khanate during the 1700s.
The structure honors Molla Panah Vagif, a poet and diplomat whose works left a lasting mark on Azerbaijani literature and thought. His literary contributions remain central to how people in this region understand their cultural identity.
The building was fully restored in 2021, making all its architectural features easily accessible to visitors walking through the site. The clear layout helps you move around comfortably without confusion.
The structure stands on the Jidir Duzu plain and was among the first modern memorial buildings in the region to be built using constructivist principles. This approach was unusual for its time and set it apart from traditional tombs in the area.
