Aghdam District, Administrative district in western Azerbaijan
Aghdam is an administrative district in western Azerbaijan that covers a large territory across the Karabakh region. The district borders several neighboring administrative areas, and its capital is now located in Quzanli.
The district was established in 1930 and came under Armenian administration from 1993 until 2020. A ceasefire agreement in November 2020 led to its return under Azerbaijani control.
The name Aghdam comes from ancient Turkic languages meaning 'white castle', referencing early defensive structures in the region.
The district is largely rural and best explored with your own transport. Visitors should check conditions in advance, as infrastructure continues to develop in the area.
The original site of Aghdam once housed an unusual museum dedicated to bread history, one of only a few of its kind worldwide. This building suffered heavy damage during conflicts and now stands as a reminder of the area's complicated past.
