Khachinchay reservoir, lake in Azerbaijan
Khachinchay reservoir is a dam structure in Aghdam District built to supply water for local agriculture. The dam stands 44 meters (144 feet) high and stretches nearly a thousand meters in length, holding up to 23 million cubic meters of water that flows through a 6.6 kilometer (4.1 mile) main canal to farms and orchards.
The reservoir was constructed in the 1960s during the Soviet period to irrigate local farms and villages. It remained damaged and unmaintained after 1993 until Azerbaijan regained control of the area in 2020.
The reservoir serves as a focal point for local farming communities who depend on its water for their livelihoods. It represents the restoration of infrastructure that sustains both agricultural practices and the rhythm of daily life in the region.
The site is accessible and offers views of the water and surrounding farmland with nearby facilities including administrative buildings and a pump station. Visiting is straightforward, though the landscape is largely open with limited natural shelter.
The dam displays visible cracks and blast damage from decades of neglect before its restoration was completed in 2023. These marks on the structure tell the story of how the infrastructure was reclaimed for the benefit of the farming communities that depend on it.
