Handaberd, Medieval fortress in Martakert Province, Azerbaijan.
Handaberd is a stone fortress on elevated ground near the Lev River, featuring thick defensive walls and multiple wells within its confines. The structure uses river stone and displays different construction phases spanning centuries.
Hasan Jalal founded the fortress in 1201 and used it as a strategic military stronghold. In subsequent centuries it was expanded and rebuilt several times.
The fortress displays architectural styles from different periods, with foundations from the 5th century and later modifications that reflect regional building techniques.
Visitors reach the fortress via a forest trail from Knaravan Village and need sturdy footwear for the uphill walk to the entrance. The path is wooded and the climb is steep, so allow adequate time and come prepared.
The internal structure extends about 90 meters in length and contains multiple wells that were used for both water storage and keeping food cool underground. These wells were crucial for sustaining the garrison during extended sieges.
