East Zangezur Economic Region, Economic region in southeastern Azerbaijan.
The East Zangezur Economic Region comprises five districts across approximately 7,400 square kilometers (2,900 square miles) of mountainous terrain in southeastern Azerbaijan. The territory includes Kalbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, Zangilan, and Jabrayil, connected by varying elevations and natural transitions.
The territory was established as a separate economic region in July 2021, arising from a restructuring of the previous Kalbajar-Lachin Economic Region. The addition of Jabrayil district marked a key administrative change in the regional organization.
The region has long been shaped by farming, with residents adapting their methods to mountainous terrain and different climate zones. These practices remain visible in how people work the land and organize their daily lives in villages and fields.
Transportation connections between districts are being developed to improve accessibility and the flow of goods to agricultural markets. Visitors should account for varying elevations when planning routes, as they affect travel times and road conditions.
The territory borders Iran to the south, making it a natural meeting point for cross-border trade routes and regional exchange. This position offers visitors insight into how the area functions as a connection between different economic spheres.
