National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, National and university library in Stari Grad, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The National and University Library occupies a grand building featuring dark orange and yellow horizontal stripes with Islamic-style arches in Moorish Revival architecture.
The library building suffered complete destruction during the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992, resulting in the loss of 1.5 million volumes and 155,000 rare manuscripts.
The institution preserves extensive collections of documents from Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods, representing the multicultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Located at coordinates 43°51′21.5″N 18°23′50″E, the library provides research facilities, reading rooms, and specialized services for students and scholars.
The library building, known as Vijecnica, hosted Archduke Franz Ferdinand for a reception on June 28, 1914, hours before his assassination triggered World War I.
