National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina
National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, National and university library in Stari Grad, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The National and University Library is a striking building with dark orange and yellow horizontal stripes and Islamic-style arches in Moorish Revival style. The building was completely reconstructed after its destruction and now houses reading rooms and research facilities for students and scholars.
The building was constructed in the late 1800s as a city hall during Austro-Hungarian rule and represented the architectural ambitions of that era. During the 1990s war it suffered severe damage, yet its reconstruction became a symbol of the city's rebirth.
The collections inside reflect centuries of shared life, with books and documents from Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian times. Visitors can discover the different languages and cultures that shaped the region through what is preserved here.
The building sits in the historic center and is easily reached on foot, with access and interior spaces open to visitors. It is wise to check current opening hours ahead of your visit, as these can vary by season or special events.
Formal receptions for dignitaries took place within these walls on June 28, 1914, the same day that would reshape European history. The building's role in that night makes it a silent witness to a critical moment of world events.
