The marketplace was founded in 1462 during Ottoman rule and quickly became an important trading hub for the region. It remained a center of commerce and craft production for centuries, shaping the economy of Bosnia.

The marketplace keeps alive craft traditions passed down through generations, visible in the daily work of artisans throughout the streets. You can watch metalworkers and leather craftspeople create their wares on site, making these practices part of the living market experience.

The bazaar is best explored on foot since the narrow lanes are not suited for vehicles and pedestrian traffic dominates. It helps to arrive early in the day when it is less crowded and artisans are actively working at their stations.

Kazandžiluk Street is home to specialized coppersmiths who focus on creating traditional Bosnian coffee sets, with each piece hammered and shaped individually by hand. These artisans sell their finished products directly from their workshops, allowing visitors to watch the entire process from raw metal to completed item.
