Sarajevo International Airport, International airport in Butmir, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sarajevo International Airport is an international facility in Butmir within Ilidža Municipality. The site features a single-level passenger hall with separate arrival and departure zones serving regional routes as well as connections to Western Europe and the Middle East.
The airport opened in 1969 as a civilian hub for the Socialist Republic and saw major upgrades leading up to the 1984 Winter Olympics. During the conflict of the 1990s, it served primarily as a base for relief organizations before eventually reopening for civilian operations.
The terminal architecture blends Yugoslav modernist design with post-war additions, reflecting decades of changing political contexts. Travelers often notice the bilingual signage using both Latin and Cyrillic scripts, a daily reminder of the country's cultural complexity.
Buses run regularly from the terminal to the city center, offering a straightforward alternative to taxis. Visitors should note that the terminal is relatively compact, so check-in queues may take longer during peak travel periods.
In the early 1990s, a makeshift tunnel ran beneath the runway to allow civilians access to the besieged city. This passage is now part of a memorial site located just a few kilometers from the current terminal building.
