Tunnel of Salvation, History museum in Donji Kotorac, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Tunnel of Salvation is a history museum housed in an underground passage that connects two neighborhoods in Sarajevo and stretches over 800 meters. The site displays preserved tunnel sections, wartime objects, and photographs that document daily life during the siege.
The tunnel system was dug during the Siege of Sarajevo between 1993 and 1995 to transport people and supplies between the two isolated neighborhoods. It allowed the besieged population to move around enemy control and maintain vital connections.
The museum preserves wartime testimonies through recorded interviews, personal objects, and educational programs focusing on Sarajevo's resilience during conflict.
Visitors can explore both sections of the original tunnel and museum exhibits, with guided tours available in different languages. It is best to visit on quieter days to enjoy a more comfortable walk through the space.
The tunnel system was entirely dug by hand and required removal of hundreds of cubic meters of soil by residents and volunteers working together. Despite simple tools, this underground passage functioned thousands of times daily to help families escape and survive.
