Vrelo Bosne, Karst spring in Ilidža Municipality, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Vrelo Bosne is a karst spring in Ilidža Municipality where water rises from underground sources and marks the start of the Bosna River. The spring sits at about 492 meters elevation and feeds multiple natural fountains across a large area.
A Roman-style stone bridge near the spring was built between 1530 and 1550, using stones from an ancient Roman structure that once connected to Aquae Sulphurae. This bridge shows how this area has been valued for its water for many centuries.
The Main Avenue, created between 1888 and 1892, is a tree-lined promenade that shows Austro-Hungarian influence in the region. Locals and visitors have long used this path as a place to spend time together and take in the surroundings.
The spring is easy to reach by public transport to Ilidža, from where you can walk or take a traditional horse-drawn carriage. The paths around the area are well set up and accessible to most visitors.
The protected natural area contains multiple springs beyond just the main source, and they supply drinking water to Sarajevo. This makes the place vital for the region and shows how nature provides resources that people depend on daily.
