Pionirska dolina, Zoo and recreational center in Centar municipality, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Pionirska dolina is a zoo and recreational park in the Centar municipality of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, combining animal enclosures with open green areas. Paths wind through the grounds, passing habitats for a range of animal species alongside open spaces suited to walking and resting.
The zoo was originally founded at a different site in Sarajevo before being moved to its current valley location. The new site offered more space and brought the facility closer to the city center.
The name Pionirska dolina means "Pioneers' Valley" in Bosnian, a reference to the socialist youth culture that shaped the park's early identity. Today it draws mainly families from Sarajevo who come to spend time outdoors and let children see live animals up close.
The park is easy to reach on foot or by public transport from central Sarajevo and works well for a half-day or full-day outing. Paths are clearly marked, making it straightforward to find your way around even without a map.
The park once hosted a temporary exhibition of life-sized dinosaur models put together by international specialists. This made it an unexpected stop for anyone with an interest in prehistoric animals, well beyond the usual zoo visit.
