Necropolis for the victims of Fascism, War memorial cemetery in Novi Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina
This necropolis consists of twelve megalithic structures made from Bihacite stone on Čamića Brdo hill, connected by a network of paths and stone steps. The site uses abstract architectural forms to create its visual composition.
The memorial was inaugurated in 1975 to honor around 700 civilians from Central Bosnia who were executed here during World War II in 1941. The site itself later became affected by bullet impacts during the 1992-95 conflict.
The stone monuments were designed by architect Bogdan Bogdanović and shape how this place looks and is experienced. Visitors often see different meanings in the shapes: some recognize dragon sentinels, others see paired snakes or soldier heads.
The site is accessible through paths and stairs that allow visitors to climb the hill and explore the monuments. Annual commemorative ceremonies with wreath-laying take place on May 9.
The stone monuments still bear bullet impacts from the conflicts of the 20th century, displaying their history on their surfaces. Notably, text referring to specific military forces was deliberately removed from the entrance stone.
