Necropolis of stecci at Radimlja, the historic site

The Radimlja necropolis is a medieval burial ground containing 133 monumental limestone tombstones known as stećci. These monuments feature elaborate carvings that depict human figures, hunting scenes, and geometric patterns from the medieval period.

This burial ground was established in the 1480s when the powerful Miloradović-Stjepanović family rose to prominence and controlled lands stretching from Stolac to Mostar. The cemetery reflects how regional rulers at that time shaped burial customs and artistic expression.

The carved tombstones show a blend of medieval artistic styles that combine Christian symbols with depictions of the deceased's status and position. Weapons and ceremonial scenes tell stories of family rank and social standing.

The site sits west of Stolac and is accessible from the Čapljina-Stolac road. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes for walking among the tombstones and bring sun protection on clear days.

Each tombstone was carved from limestone quarried from nearby Ošanići hill. This shows how medieval stonemasons skillfully used local materials and created their works right where they would stand for centuries.
