Koppenberg, Mountain pass in Oudenaarde, Belgium.
Koppenberg is a mountain pass in Oudenaarde with cobblestone surfaces and slopes reaching up to 22 percent gradient. The route stretches roughly 600 meters with an average incline of about 11 percent.
This pass entered the Tour of Flanders cycling race in 1976, one of Belgium's most famous races. It was removed from the event in 1987 following a serious accident involving cyclist Jesper Skibby.
The name comes from Dutch slang meaning cobblestones that look like children's heads, referring to the rounded stones covering this steep road.
The steep surface becomes slippery during rain, making sturdy footwear essential for safety. Visitors should prepare for a physically demanding walk along this challenging climb.
The surrounding forest holds oak trees aged between 150 and 200 years, creating a natural setting that contrasts with the stark road surface. Each spring wild hyacinths bloom in masses across the area, transforming the landscape with their blue flowers.
