Kezelfort, Military fort and nature area in Edelare, Belgium
Kezelfort is a restored military fort with a pentagonal shape and thick defensive walls located near Oudenaarde. The site contains a network of underground passages running beneath the grounds that connect different sections of the fortification.
The fort was built between 1822 and 1824 as part of a defense system against French invasions during that era. The site was later converted into a private residence with additional structures added to the grounds.
The name reflects the local history of families who made this place their home over generations. Visitors can observe how military defenses were later adapted for private residence and everyday living.
The grounds are surrounded by forest paths and open areas that can be explored on foot. Wear sturdy shoes since the underground sections can be damp and the terrain has uneven surfaces in places.
The underground tunnels serve as a wintering refuge for several bat species that have been scientifically monitored for decades. This sheltered space plays an important role in the survival of local wildlife.
