Monument van Tacambaro

Monument van Tacambaro is a sculpture by artist Guillaume Geefs positioned on a stone base at Tacambaroplein square. The work features a reclining female figure as its central element.

The memorial commemorates Belgian volunteers who died in the Battle of Tacámbaro in Mexico in 1865, including Major Tydgadt and Captain Ernest Chazal. This distant conflict shaped the memory of Belgian soldiers who gave their lives overseas.

The figure shows a mourning woman leaning over a globe and placing a crown on a grave, symbolizing the bond between Belgium and Mexico. This portrayal reflects how the place preserves the memory of those who fell far from home.

The monument is located in central Oudenaarde and is easily reached through several pedestrian paths. The square is fully accessible on foot and offers orientation through nearby war memorials from different periods.

The monument is one of only two in Belgium dedicated to the Battle of Tacámbaro, with its counterpart standing in Leopoldsburg. This connection between two towns shows how both places preserve the same military history.
