Brussels South Charleroi Airport, International airport in Charleroi, Belgium
Brussels South Charleroi Airport is a major international facility in the northern part of Charleroi, connecting travelers to numerous European destinations through budget carriers. The terminal features a compact layout with check-in halls, shops, and service areas spread across a central building.
Originally established in 1919 as a pilot training facility, the site gradually evolved into a commercial hub for passenger flights over the following decades. After its official opening in July 1991, operations grew steadily and attracted numerous budget airlines.
Named after Brussels despite its southern location, the terminal has become a gateway for travelers exploring smaller European cities and regional destinations. Many passengers use it as a starting point for trips through Wallonia and neighboring French regions.
Shuttle buses link the terminal regularly with Brussels city center, while additional lines reach Luxembourg and several French cities. Travelers should allow enough time for security checks and luggage drop-off, especially during early morning hours and weekends.
The runway extension to 3200 meters (approximately 10500 feet) in 2021 allows larger aircraft to land and opens up new long-haul routes to more distant destinations. This expansion significantly changed the technical capabilities of the facility and broadened the flight network for passengers.
