St Martin's Church of Aalst
St Martin's Church of Aalst, Gothic church in Aalst, Belgium
St Martin's Church features pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and stone masonry work characteristic of medieval religious architecture from the 15th century.
Founded in 1480, the church remained the sole parish institution in Aalst until 1868, serving as the central place of worship for local residents.
The church contains a significant altarpiece by Peter Paul Rubens depicting Saint Roch, along with sculptures created by Hieronymus Duquesnoy the Elder.
The church building undergoes continuous restoration work to maintain its structural elements while remaining open for religious services and visits.
A copper meridian line, installed in 1839, runs through the south transept of the church, marking a scientific addition to this religious structure.
