Fort de Liers

Fort de Liers features a triangular layout with deep defensive trenches and concrete walls constructed according to military engineering specifications of the 1880s.

General Henri Alexis Brialmont designed this fortress between 1881 and 1884 as part of twelve fortifications surrounding Liège to protect against potential invasions.

The fortress represents a shift in Belgian military architecture, being one of the first structures built entirely from unreinforced concrete rather than traditional masonry.

The fort now operates as an aircraft engine testing facility for Safran Aero Boosters and remains closed to public visits.

A defensive ditch measuring 6 meters deep and 8 meters wide encircles the fortress, with concentrated armament positions in its central structure.
