Beguinage of Tongeren

The Sint-Catharina Beguinage features cobblestone streets, courtyards, religious buildings, and houses within a stone wall near Moeren Gate.

Founded before 1239, the beguinage reached its peak in the 18th century with 300 beguines living in 100 houses until French Revolution changes.

The site represents a community where independent women created their own lifestyle between secular and religious life in medieval Flanders.

Visitors can explore the museum Beghina in the courtyard Onder de Linde to learn about daily life of the beguines.

The 1659 infirmary complex now houses a brasserie, while the Ursula chapel from 1294 functions as a cultural events venue.
