Moerenpoort, Medieval city gate and military museum in Tongeren, Belgium.
The Moerenpoort is a stone gate structure with a defense tower in Tongeren, featuring thick walls and protective elements built using medieval construction methods. The tower forms the core of this fortification and houses the museum exhibitions.
The gate was built in 1379 and is the only surviving example of the six gates that originally protected Tongeren's medieval city walls. It has endured centuries of changes as the city evolved around it.
The museum inside presents objects related to the city's military past, including weapons, documents, and information about how people defended Tongeren. Visitors can learn what part this structure played in protecting the community.
To visit the museum inside, you need to arrange access through Visit Tongeren or the Teseum. The renovation work has been completed, so the museum is now open to visitors during regular visiting hours.
From the top of the tower, visitors can look out across the medieval beguinage district and the old town center of Tongeren below. This vantage point reveals how the medieval streets and buildings fit together in ways not visible from street level.
