Noordkasteelbrug, Railway bridge in northern Antwerp, Belgium

Noordkasteelbrug is a railway bridge in northern Antwerp that carries multiple tracks across the Oosterweelsteenweg and Amerikadok waterway. It functions as a key connection point linking rail lines that serve the port area and routes to inland destinations.

Until 1980 the link between the Vijfde Havendok and Amerikadok was made by two low movable bridges, the Oosterweelbrug (Scherzer type) and the Wilmarsdonkbrug (Strauss type), which had to open for every ship and held up road and rail traffic on the Oosterweelsteenweg. In 1980 the connection was rebuilt and the present bridge, with two Strauss bascule spans, was installed.

The name refers to the nearby Noordkasteel, a former fortification on the right bank of the Scheldt. The bridge replaced two low movable bridges, the Oosterweelbrug of the Scherzer type and the Wilmarsdonkbrug of the Strauss type, which had to open for every passing vessel. Its two bascule spans are of the Strauss type, each counterweight weighing about 1,400 tonnes.

The bridge carries rail line 221 on the western span and line 221B on the eastern span, with tracks set into the roadway. When trains pass, double barriers and many red lights stop cars. The VHF working channel is 62 and the contact channel is 74.

The bridge opens only for ships with high superstructures: its three spans leave 6.50 m of clearance, so most vessels pass without interrupting road and rail traffic. Each counterweight weighs about 1,400 tonnes and balances a movable deck of roughly 625 tonnes. The navigable width between the broad piers is 50 m.
