Lone Tree Cemetery, Military cemetery in Wijtschate, Belgium.
Lone Tree Cemetery is a military burial ground maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission located on the Messines Ridge in Belgium. The site occupies one of the highest points of the ridge and holds approximately 88 graves of soldiers from various nations.
The cemetery was established in 1917 to honor soldiers who fell during the Battle of Messines, a major engagement on the Western Front. Belgium permanently granted the land to the United Kingdom as recognition of the sacrifices made by Commonwealth forces in defending the country.
The name comes from a solitary tree that stood on the ridge during the war and became a landmark for soldiers in the area. Today visitors find a quiet burial ground surrounded by grass and mature trees, serving as a place for reflection.
The cemetery sits on elevated ground with good views across the surrounding hills and is accessible on foot via local paths. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is rolling and weather conditions can change quickly.
Nearby stands a large crater formed by a British mine explosion during the battle that remains clearly visible today. This scar in the landscape serves as a physical reminder of the destructive power of the mining operations used during the conflict.
