Fort van Sint-Filips, Military fortress in Antwerp, Belgium
Fort van Sint-Filips is a historical military defense structure located in Antwerp along the Scheldt River. The structure features a long brick building with three domes and a dry moat designed to protect against river-based attacks.
The fort was first built in 1584 under Spanish commander Alessandro Farnese. It was later rebuilt between 1870 and 1881 as part of Belgium's National Redoubt defense system.
The fort shows typical features of Belgian military architecture from the 1800s and follows Brialmont design principles. You can observe the fortification layout from the outside and understand how it was built to protect the city.
Access to the fort is currently not open to visitors, but you can observe the exterior from nearby viewpoints. Information panels in the area explain the structure and its defensive role.
Each of the three domes originally housed two cannons aimed specifically at ships traveling up the Scheldt toward Antwerp. This strategic placement allowed coordinated defense against river-based threats.
