Fort of Stabroek

The Fort of Stabroek is a trapezoidal military installation built from reinforced concrete with a moat linked to an antitank canal system. It sits surrounded by green fields and open land, offering space for different activities and exploration today.

The installation was built from 1902 to 1907 as part of a defense ring around Antwerp. It played a role during both World Wars before losing its military status in 1947.

The name refers to its location in Stabroek, and today the fort sits as a green space within countryside and forest. Visitors can explore the massive concrete structure and walk the grounds, which shows how military engineering shaped the landscape.

The grounds are open to visitors who can enjoy recreational activities like paintball, disc golf, and fort climbing. Wear sturdy shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing, as the terrain is exposed to the elements.

After military operations ended, a local dentist bought the fort in 1955 with plans to convert it into a mushroom cultivation facility. This unusual chapter shows how the building found a second life far from its original military purpose.
