Former House and Workplace of Clas Grüner Sterner, Art Nouveau protected heritage site in Ixelles, Belgium.
The former house and workshop on Rue du Lac is an Art Nouveau building constructed in brick and white stone across two floors. A large stained glass window illuminates the stairwell and serves as the main artistic feature within the interior.
The house was built in 1902 by architect Ernest Delune and later became the workshop of Austrian glassmaker Clas Grüner Sterner. His craft gave the building its distinctive character and linked it permanently to the Art Nouveau movement.
The building demonstrates how artists and craftspeople lived and worked together during the Art Nouveau period. The stained glass and spatial design were integrated into daily creative practice.
The building is located at 6 Rue du Lac in Ixelles and underwent complete renovation between 2019 and 2020. The facade and interior glass elements were carefully restored and can be viewed during a visit.
The studio on the top floor features a trapezoidal bow-window that spans the full width of the facade. This unusual window shape was specifically designed to direct natural light for glasswork and artistic practice.
