Phoenix 44, Memorial sculpture on Avenue Louise, Brussels, Belgium
Phoenix 44 is a bronze sculpture located on the roundabout near Avenue Louise in Brussels, composed of three connected segments arranged in a wing formation. The work spans across the left side of the traffic circle and stands about 3 meters (10 feet) tall.
The sculpture was commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Belgo-British Union to honor the liberation of Brussels by British forces during World War II. The work serves as a lasting reminder of this pivotal moment in the city's past.
The sculpture incorporates modern artistic elements within the urban landscape, demonstrating the evolution of public art installations in Brussels during the 1990s.
The sculpture sits on a traffic roundabout and is easy to view from the street, especially if arriving by tramway lines 8 or 93. The area is flat and accessible without barriers for most visitors.
The three bronze segments form the shape of the letter V when viewed together, a symbol for victory that commonly appears in war memorials. This geometric arrangement gives the work a subtle visual power that visitors often overlook at first glance.
