Castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne, Medieval castle in La Roche-en-Ardenne, Belgium.

The stone fortress stands on a rocky ridge between the Ourthe River and Deister hill slopes, offering views over the surrounding valley.

The first castle construction began in 844 by Count Adelard, replacing an earlier Celtic settlement and Roman fortified camp at this strategic location.

The castle grounds host regular demonstrations of medieval activities including archery, traditional crafts, and falconry shows throughout the year.

The castle operates from 1 PM to 4 PM on weekdays and 11 AM to 4:30 PM during weekends, with adult admission at 8.50 euros.

Local legend tells of Countess Berthe's ghost appearing near the ruins during summer evenings, marking the location where she met her death.

Hidden places in Belgium

Belgium preserves numerous historical sites and natural areas that remain outside the usual tourist circuits. The country contains medieval fortifications, castles from various periods, and protected areas that provide insight into its military and cultural past. The Hallerbos forest transforms into a blue carpet of Atlantic bluebells each spring. Fort Eben-Emael, once considered impregnable, documents 20th-century military architecture. The prehistoric flint mines of Spiennes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, testify to 6,000 years of mining history. These locations combine natural heritage with historical evidence and offer visitors the opportunity to discover lesser-known aspects of Belgium.
