Tank memorial M4A1 Sherman

The M4A1 Sherman tank is positioned in the center of La Roche-en-Ardenne at Quai de l'Ourthe, displaying visible combat damage marks across its front section. The vehicle shows the physical toll that battle took during World War II.

The Belgian 1/3 Lancers Regiment installed this tank in 2004 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of La Roche-en-Ardenne. The memorial commemorates the January 1945 counter-offensive when Allied forces pushed back German occupation.

A plaque on the tank honors soldiers from the 2nd and 3rd US Armored Divisions who liberated La Roche-en-Ardenne and nearby villages. The memorial reflects how the community remembers those who helped restore freedom to the region.

The tank is directly accessible from Quai de l'Ourthe and sits near the Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes, making it easy to visit on foot. The memorial has no entrance barriers, allowing visitors to view it anytime from the surrounding street.

This particular tank, named AMBOY, suffered a direct hit during combat and lost its entire crew during World War II. The visible damage marks on the vehicle are evidence of this tragic engagement from 1945.
