Citadel of Dinant, Military fortress museum on a cliff in Dinant, Belgium.
The fortification rises 100 meters above the Meuse River, featuring stone walls and defensive structures designed for strategic military purposes.
The Dutch military constructed the current citadel between 1818 and 1821, using the foundations of previous fortifications dating back to the 11th century.
The museum exhibits display traditional Belgian military artifacts, weapons, and equipment, demonstrating the evolution of defense strategies through centuries.
Visitors can reach the citadel by climbing 408 steps or taking a cable car that departs from the city center of Dinant.
The fortress houses an air raid shelter that collapsed during World War I, preserving the exact moment of impact from German bombardment.

Belgium preserves numerous historical sites and natural areas that remain outside the usual tourist circuits. The country contains medieval fortifications, castles from various periods, and protected areas that provide insight into its military and cultural past. The Hallerbos forest transforms into a blue carpet of Atlantic bluebells each spring. Fort Eben-Emael, once considered impregnable, documents 20th-century military architecture. The prehistoric flint mines of Spiennes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, testify to 6,000 years of mining history. These locations combine natural heritage with historical evidence and offer visitors the opportunity to discover lesser-known aspects of Belgium.
