De Holsteen, Prehistoric sandstone formation in Zonhoven, Belgium
The Holsteen comprises eight large sandstone blocks with irregular holes, formed through natural processes during the Miocene period approximately 20 million years ago.
The northernmost stone served as a polishing surface during the Neolithic period, where inhabitants shaped their tools, knives, and arrows against the rock.
Discovered in 1862, the archaeological site gained protection status in 1967, leading to extensive research that revealed prehistoric artifacts and flint fragments.
The site spans 6,685 square meters along Holsteenweg, featuring information panels and benches for visitors to examine the geological formations.
The stone formation contains 51 distinct grooves and a polishing surface, making it the only fixed prehistoric polishing stone documented in Flanders.
